Fruit & Vegetable WholesalersBuying in person

There are two principle ways to buy fruit and veg at the Market. Face-to-face buying is done with the wholesalers on the Buyers' Walk.

Here, each company has salesmen who stand behind the desk at the front of the unit. The salesmen will help you find what you are looking for. If you are paying cash, which is the usual method until an account has been established, you pay at the cash window. A porter will then put your order together so you can drive round and pick it up from the back of the unit.

Each company tends to specialise in something slightly different, from root veg or mushrooms, to herbs or 'exotics'. The produce is displayed at the front of the unit and is called the 'flash'. It is accepted and expected that buyers will touch, smell and sometimes taste before buying.

Opening and closing times of the Buyers' Walk are a little flexible and vary with wholesaler but the core hours are from midnight - 6:00am Monday - Saturday. The Buyers' Walk is not as loud or bustling a place as some new customers expect. You can approach any company and take your time to talk to wholesalers and get the right produce.
