About Covent Garden Market Authority

Covent Garden Market Authority (CGMA) is the team that looks after and manages New Covent Garden Market.  A statutory body, set up by Acts of Parliament in 1961, we own and are responsible for the running of the market. We are accountable to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

We work to give our market community the best possible space, support and help to connect with each other and grow.

We lease space on the market and provide our community with the facilities they need to run their businesses. This includes cleaning, recycling and waste disposal, security, traffic control and the maintenance of buildings and equipment.

We also work to support and promote our tenant businesses. We’re behind the market’s social media, website, campaigns, marketing, and promotions. We offer business support and development, and we link our community to environment, community, and health initiatives.

Summary of the Role

The Assistant Facilities Manager will report to the Facilities Manager.  This position has an integral role in managing relationships and contracts with the Market’s tenants and third-party contractors with a practical experience of maintenance-based contractors on an industrial/operational site.

The assistant facilities manager will need to consider the following key performance indicators:

  • Breakdown incidence rate
  • Designed response times
  • Sub-contractors service levels
  • Progress against planned maintenance schedule
  • Actual spend vs. budget
  • Customer service Survey
  • Level and nature of Tenant complaints                                                                          

Roles and responsibilities / a typical day will include.

  1. To undertake regular audits of the plant, equipment, or buildings under his/her control.
  2. The management of utilities and billing, ensuring accuracy and timely input of the requested data.
  3. To write specifications for external work and to manage the tender process as required.
  4. To supervise building works or installation/commissioning of new or replacement buildings/plant as required to time, budget and agreed service levels. Providing cost/benefit analysis if requested.
  5. To attend breakdowns or failures and diagnose problems; to organise an appropriate response and ensure that breakdowns or other incidents cause the minimum disruption to the tenants and other users of the Market.
  6. To direct, instruct, control and quality assure the work of third parties within his/her functional area.
  7. To measure the performance of all contractors and suppliers under his/her control and implement a programme of continuous improvement.
  8. To ensure that the Authority has access to effective, responsive and value for money third party contractors and suppliers of maintenance repair services and spares.
  9. To inform tenants of the proposed works in a timely manner both orally and in writing.
  10. To maintain accurate and accessible records at all times
  11. To ensure that all appropriate health & safety legislation (including CDM regulations) and Authority policy is adhered to within area of responsibility.
  12. To consider environmental impact on any works to be carried out.
  13. To continue professional development to ensure best practice.
  14. To continuously improve on CGMA’s ESG aspirations.
  15. Supporting the CGMA team in their day-to-day operations
  16. Any other duties that may be reasonably required


  • Formal qualifications in the appropriate
  • Previous experience of buildings plant and equipment of a similar age and condition to that at the New Covent Garden Market.
  • Previous experience of Oversight of the third-party contracts (desirable)

Salary: £50,000 per annum
