A group of twenty students from Plumpton College floristry school experienced the wonderful sights and aromas of New Covent Garden’s Flower Market for the first time on Tuesday 1 October, when they visited Nine Elms for an organised tour.

Usually based at their campus in Plumpton, Sussex, the aim was to introduce the students to Britain’s only wholesale flower market, including meeting several wholesalers who spoke about the New Covent Garden’s importance to the floristry industry.

The students met Bryan Porter of Porters Foliage and Freddie Heathcoat of Green and Bloom, as both business owners explained why the Flower Market is vital to the florist trade in London and the south east. They also revealed how the students’ job direction choices could potentially see them having a career in Nine Elms.

Bryan – who is the fourth generation of his family to run the business since 1910 – explained how Porters is looking to the future by embracing new technology such as their online web shop, making it as easy for his customers as possible. Bryan also talked about how foliage is an essential part of most florists’ box of tricks and when incorporated with flair and creativity can help create unique and spectacular creations.

On a similar topic, Freddie talked about how Green and Bloom was created as a merger of two previously established businesses and how they have positioned themselves as a very female-friendly environment by recruiting a knowledgeable female sales team. Looking ahead, Freddie explained the roles that floristry students could potentially apply for when they graduate.

Sara Beney, a tutor at Plumpton College who attended the event, was delighted with the tour. “It’s great for our students to see the scale of the Market’s wholesale operation as well as the amazing choice of flowers, plants and foliage available. I’m sure the visit has inspired them with their studies and they’re already looking forward to their next Market visit.”
