More than 140 artists submitted proposals for the commission, which recognises and promotes emerging artists and celebrates the fresh produce that can be found behind the 20-metre-long wall, at London’s historic wholesale market.
The three finalists - Chioma Ince, Sade-Mia Sangar and Sian Fan – recently visited the Fruit and Vegetable Market and the Flower Market to learn more about how the market operates and the range of fresh produce that is on sale, ahead of submitting their final proposals for the artwork.
The panel of judges who will select this year’s winning artist include Anna Skladmann, whose artwork appeared on the Flower Market façade in 2018, and representatives from New Covent Garden’s Flower Market, Royal Botanical Gardens Kew, the Royal Horticultural Society, Wandsworth Council, Art Night, Creativethinking and Vinci St. Modwen, the market’s redevelopment partner.
New Covent Garden Market Vitrine Art Commission is a three-year long public art commission, initiated and funded by Vinci St. Modwen in association with Covent Garden Market Authority and realised in collaboration with London’s largest contemporary arts festival, Art Night.
Last year's winner was ‘Bloom!’ by the BLKBRD Collective, which will remain on display until the new artwork is installed in October.
