Follow these five tips to avoid Valentine’s Day floral faux pas

13 Feb, 2026

This Valentine’s Day, there will as ever be an abundance of flowers bought for loved ones across the nation, but many of them don’t last beyond a few days. However, according to Bloomfields at New Covent Garden Flower Market, your blooms can be made to last far longer with just a few simple hacks.

With more than 40 years of experience, Bloomfields has seen and sold every type of bunch of flowers there is and heard every conceivable way that people inadvertently shorten their lifespan. Here are the family-run wholesale florist’s five top tips this Valentine’s Day:

  1. Always cut stems at an angle

A straight cut can cause stems to sit flat against the bottom of the vase, restricting water intake. Cutting at an angle before you put them in the vase increases surface area and allows each flower to absorb more water.

  1. Let your bouquet breathe

Bouquets often arrive tightly bound for transport, but once home they should be gently loosened. Allow space between the stems, as this improves air circulation and prevents flowers from sweating up against each other..

  1. Recut stems every couple of days

You’ve cut your stems at the right angle, but they should also be given a fresh cut as soon as they arrive home, and again every two to three days. This removes blocked tissue at the base of the stem and helps flowers take in the water they need to keep blossoming.

  1. Refresh the water regularly

The water in your vase should be changed at least every two days. Bacteria build-up is one of the main causes of early wilting, so clean water, and a quick rinse of the vase, will make a huge difference.

  1. Keep flowers cool

Heat speeds up the floral ageing process. Keep flowers away from radiators, fireplaces, direct sunlight and any other source of heat. Cooler environments help slow down the deterioration cycle and extend vase life.

“Following these simple tips will improve the lifespan of any bunch of flowers,” said Bloomfields. “However, before you do any of these things, make sure you buy the best flowers you can afford in the first place. Always shop at your local independent florist; where quality comes first.”
