English apples are second to none - and this is the month they hit the Market.
The first varieties are Discovery (pictured below), Windsor and Worcester. Conference pears are with us, too.
UK plums have started - Victoria variety below. Greengage also a good buy. You will find many other plum varieties from the Continent, too, including Mirabelle.
Damsons and sloes have started their short season.
Other stone fruit is winding down, so not long left for cherries, peaches, nectarines and apricots.
UK soft fruit includes raspberries and strawberries.
Melons are at their peak - excellent Charentais, watermelons, Piel de Sapo etc.
Turkish figs have just begun, with a season that will last well into October. French and Italian figs also available.
It will be a month or so until the citrus season starts in earnest.
But here is a snapshot of the Italian lemons varieties that are available now - green Verdello and Amalfi.
Kentish cobnuts are underway. At this stage, they are still milky and 'wet' - delicious on the plate.
UK veg is firing on all fronts at the end of the growing season.
Brassicas include purple sprouting, Savoy and Hispi.
Runner beans and sweetcorn are at their prime right now and very reasonably priced.
Other highlights include courgettes, summer squashes and tomatoes.
See you next month for the October market report.
