Market carol singers raise spirits and money for charity

Carol singers from the Covent Garden Market Authority (CGMA) brought the festive spirit to Nine Elms this week, raising more than £500 for two charitable good causes: Royal Trinity Hospice and City Harvest.

CGMA Board Member Sarah Calcutt said: “It’s always a joy to sing carols and it was wonderful to sing for the Market’s tenants and their customers, a really great way to start Christmas.”  Sarah added: “I didn’t realise we had so many hidden talents within the team, Jacob [Clark] and Alasdair [Thomas] were both amazing. Thanks to everyone who supported us with singing and donations over the night in Buyers' Walk and the morning in the Flower Market – we really appreciate it.”

On Monday 15th December the singers brought carols to the original Buyers’ Walk in the Fruit and Vegetable Market, followed by a second event on Thursday 18th December, held on the Flower Market’s ground floor.

Funds from Tuesday supported the Royal Trinity Hospice charity, which provides compassionate palliative and end of life care to more than 2,400 patients and their families across central and south-west London.

Thursday’s event supported food redistribution charity City Harvest, who have a unit at New Covent Garden Market. City Harvest rescues surplus food and delivers it, for free, to more than 120,000 people a week via organisations feeding those facing food poverty.
